What is an AVIF file?

AVIF is an image format built around AV1 compression. It can keep image files small while supporting features such as transparency and high dynamic range.

Why you keep seeing .avif images

Websites use AVIF to deliver compressed images. When you save a picture, the downloaded file may be AVIF because that is the version the site sent to your browser. The extension is part of the file format, rather than a sign that the download failed.

What does AVIF stand for?

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. Image data is stored in an ISO Base Media File Format container. It can contain still images or image sequences, depending on the file.

What is the AVIF format good at?

These capabilities do not mean every AVIF image uses them. Many everyday downloads are ordinary still images.

When should you convert an AVIF file?

Keep AVIF when your software accepts it and you want an efficient source file. Convert to PNG for transparent image workflows, or to JPG / JPEG for forms and apps that expect photographs in JPEG format. Choose WEBP when your web publishing system expects WEBP.

Will changing the extension work?

No. Renaming photo.avif to photo.png does not change the image encoding. A real converter decodes the AVIF image and writes a new file in the target format.

Does conversion make the image better?

Conversion improves format compatibility, not original detail. A PNG conversion avoids another lossy compression step, but cannot restore information the source AVIF already discarded.
